Abide in the Truth of Jesus
If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, you also will abide in the Son and in the Father. 1 John 2:24 NKJV
A close friend of mine spent over a decade serving in a ministry that emphasized prayer and fasting. It deeply impacted their faith.
Then the truth came out. The ministry was built on lies, abuse, and cover-up. The leaders were not who they projected themselves to be. This was soul-crushing.
The most painful part was not disappointment with an organization. It was what the truth did to everything connected to it. If those trusted leaders were wrong about so much, what else had been wrong? What could still be trusted about God, the world, and others?
The book of 1 John was written to Christians experiencing their own kind of spiritual disillusionment. According to 1 John 2:18-27, people who had been part of their community had left and were now teaching something different about Jesus' identity and work.
John did not tell them to ignore what had happened or to stop asking difficult questions. He told them to abide in what they had heard from the beginning. Our faith was never meant to rest on a ministry, a pastor, a denomination, or an institution. Those things are often a means to Jesus, but none of them are Jesus.
As we fast and pray, we need to examine beliefs, consider traditions, and grieve failures, but we do not need to discard Jesus because someone misrepresented Him or because we were disappointed in an outcome of our work and prayer.
When everything else begins to crumble, return to what can bear the weight of your life. Remember what you received from the beginning and abide in Him. “And this is the promise that He has promised us—eternal life” (1 John 2:25 NKJV).
