Higher Ground

When I was a kid, I attempted hunting a few times. Since we would leave well before the sun came up, we used flashlights to find our way to our tree stands. We could do this because we had gone out in the daylight a few days before and put reflective ribbons along the path that led to our stands. We would start out on the trail, and pretty soon we would see one of those reflectors. Then we would go a little further down the trail and, again, see another reflector.

The thing is, we couldn’t see every reflector at once; we could only see what the light revealed for a few feet. But we knew that we had planned the hike in the daylight, and that if we just kept walking on the path, we would eventually make it to our stands.

When following God, we tend to want a well-lit path with a lamp post every ten feet. But what I’ve learned is that most of the time there is enough light to take the next step.

Usually, it’s not what we can see that scares us; it’s what is just beyond the light that makes us afraid. But we must remember that the good works—or the path—are prepared beforehand; we just need to walk in them.

“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them” (Ephesians 2:10).
