Fighting Fear and Anxiety

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Philippians 4:6 NLT

A few years ago, I preached a revival in a church near my home. It is interesting when you preach several messages in the short window of a week to discover which message speaks the most to your audience, and what I found is the message from this passage regarding not being afraid was the most influential.

I find fear and anxiety seep their way into the lives of so many, and even many who are Christians. But our text admonishes us not to worry about anything. That is not possible for some on their own.

Our text continues by telling us how we can put it into practice. We need to pray about everything and thank God for the blessings we have received from Him.

Prayer helps us to focus, not on our circumstances, but on the God who can do the miraculous and redeem even the worst of circumstances for our good. We lay our needs before Him in faith. We also thank Him, for sometimes we get discouraged and things look dark, and the perspective of praise draws us to a clearer picture of our lives and the blessings of God we have been given. Prayer invites us to lift our eyes to see where our help comes from. Our help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.
