You Gotta Ask!

Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. Matthew 7:7 NIV

Prayer is a great privilege. Jesus commands you to ASK, SEEK and KNOCK. You gotta ask! James writes, “You do not have because you do not ask God” (James 4:2). Nothing is too big or too little for God to handle. The angel told Mary that nothing is impossible with God (Luke 1:37).

A couple of keys to prayer are found in Matthew 7:7-12.

#1 Pray persistently. All three verbs are present tense (ask, seek and knock), encouraging you to keep on asking, seeking, and knocking. Jesus said askers receive, seekers find, and, for those who knock, the door will be opened. Do not be shy about asking, for the scriptures tell you to pray continually and not to worry, but instead pray about everything (1 Thessalonians 5:17; Philippians 4:6).

#2 Pray expectantly. In faith, believe that God hears your prayer and will answer your prayer. Because your heavenly Father is perfect, you can trust Him to always provide what is best for you to live for Him and do His will. God is honored by your expectancy as it demonstrates your confidence and trust in Him.

God’s Word shows you repeatedly that God hears and answers prayer even when it seems impossible. Noah prophesized that God would destroy the world by a flood, and the people believed it impossible. But HE did it. Elijah prayed for fire to fall on a water-soaked altar and sacrifice, and the prophets and followers of Baal said it could never happen. But HE did it.

You can’t feed over 5,000 people with just five loaves and two small fish, but JESUS did. Dead men don’t come back to life after being dead four days, but JESUS called to Lazarus, and he walked out of the grave.

Do you believe expectantly as you pray?
