Why Pray?
O You who hear prayer . . . Psalm 65:2 NKJV
My late father-in-law, Leland Trussell, was a man of prayer. He always used to say that it is God’s nature to hear and answer prayer. One of God’s titles in the Word is “O You who hear prayer” (Psalm 65:2). It is who He is!
But why should we pray?
The truth is that prayer is God’s plan to involve Christians in His work. For purposes unknown to us, He chooses to work in response to the prayers of His people. God also loves for us to pray because prayer is His means of keeping in touch with His children. It makes us increasingly like Him, because you can’t spend time with someone and not be influenced by their character!
John R. Rice, one of the very best authors on the topic of prayer, suggests several additional reasons why we should pray:
- Because God repeatedly commands it (Luke 18:1, 1 Thessalonians 5:17, Philippians 4:6, 1 Timothy 2:1, Ephesians 6:18-19, Matthew 26:41).
- Because prayer is God’s appointed way for Christians to receive from Him (James 4:2).
- Because prayer is God’s way for Christians to have joy (John 16:24).
- Because prayer is the cure for worry, the prescription for peace (Philippians 4:6,7).
- Because answered prayer is a powerful argument against skepticism (1 Kings 18:39).
- Because prayer is the only way to have the power of the Holy Spirit (Luke 11:13).
So, let’s pray!
